You are intrigued by the picture perfect homes scouring the internet. They encompass a beautiful dresser with color coordinated drawers. The fridge looks like a supermarket. Closets have a stunning showroom enhancement that makes you envious!
It's time to break into the art of Organizing! How to begin and which rooms to tackle first...
1. Finding the Space
Take a look around your home. Which space do you feel needs a revamp? A new functional flow? Maybe a cluttered space? Well let's start there.
Sometimes we get accustomed to living in a messy place because it's become a habit. Easy to throw your shirt on the floor. Keep the kitchen cabinets a mess. Your garage is a catch all from whatever made it out of your car but not into the house. It's become a "chore" that you keep saving for later. Well now's that time. You want your space to look like the latest Home Magazine cover? Well we are going to make that happen right now!
Once you figure out the space you want to tackle first, take note of how big it is. Is it a large living room? A small closet? A toiletry cabinet? The smaller it is, the more attainable as we begin the process for organizing. You can always complete a smaller project within the day...but a big project will require multiple days.
So where do we start as a beginner organizer? First thing, make sure you start this project EARLY in the day! It's never fun to begin in the afternoon and before you know it, the evening sun has set and your well into the project as night comes around.
2. Take Pictures & Measurements
Begin by taking several pictures of the area. From all angles, straight forward, the left, right side, the upper and lower areas. Once complete, take measurements of the space if you think you will be going shopping to buy containers for the space. Not all spaces need containers, but most might need a different container, hanger, or different organizer than what you have currently. Obviously whatever is currently being used, isn't the most functional that's why you decided to upgrade this organizing project in the first place!
3. Shopping For Containers
You took pictures, measurements, and now it's time to go shopping! (If your space doesn't need the new product then skip this step). My favorite stores to shop for containers are: Target, Home Goods, TJ Maxx, and The Container Store.
You will find cheaper containers at most places and The Container Store being the most expensive. So plan accordingly! While at the store, make sure you are buying product that fits within the space. That's why we took measurements! I tend to overbuy product (and can always return at a later date). Rather than underbuy...never fun when you get home and realize the project can't be completed in a day's notice because you don't 'have enough containers.
4. Categorize Your Piles
You head back home with your containers in hand. Now it's time to empty everything out! Take ALL the items out of the space and place into "similar" piles on the floor. For example, you are emptying out under your bathroom sink: put all the toothbrushes, flossers, oral items together. Place all First Aid, Medicines, and Bandages all together in another pile. And as so forth.
After everything is in piles, start placing the product into your new containers. This may take some trial and error. You will have to play around with what categories fit nicely into the correct size of containers you bought.
Once everything fits...it's almost go time!
5. Rearrange Into The Space
Now we get to play with rearranging you're filled containers into the space. You are almost done, this is the home stretch!
For a well-balanced and aesthetically pleasing look - you will want to make all the containers of same size in line with each other. Make sure the containers are same height, same width, etc. The more synchronized you can place the containers next to each other, than the better the finished product will be.
6. Labeling
The final step! Now it's time to label the containers. If you have a standard label maker, that will work just fine! If you have a fancy one...great! Either way, it's up to you how the final labeling should come out. There's even pre-made labels on Etsy, Amazon, etc. Scour the internet if you want a pretty font, different color background and so forth.
I use a P-Touch Brother label maker. I purchased mine on Amazon, as well as different color tapes (Black, White, Gold). It's fairly easy to use! You bluetooth the label maker to your phone, then you download the App, and then use straight from your phone! The label maker prints wireless and in seconds...my new favorite gadget!
So have fun with the labeling. Or purchase pre-made labels and attach to each container.
Easy. Quick. And the best part...ADMIRE your organizing work complete!
